National Legal Aid Welcomes Yvette D’Ath as New NLA Executive Director

National Legal Aid is delighted to welcome the Hon. Yvette D'Ath as our new Executive Director

National Legal Aid (NLA) welcomes the recent appointment of the Honourable Yvette D’Ath as the new NLA Executive Director. Ms. D’Ath brings more than twenty-five years of senior leadership experience in areas of justice policy, legal system reform, national advocacy, and statutory oversight.

Ms. D’Ath formerly served as Queensland’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, leading significant justice reforms and improvements to the legal system for victims of crime, including domestic and family violence. In doing this, she made a profound impact by influencing Cabinet, Parliament, regulators, and other key stakeholders. Importantly, Ms. D’Ath has dedicated much of her working career to advocating for those most vulnerable which is crucial to the advocacy of national legal assistance services.

We look forward to working with Ms. D’Ath as she contributes to NLA’s mission to improve access to justice for our disadvantaged communities, across the eight state and territory Legal Aids.

Joint statement: NDIS reforms risk real harm without proper consultation

In this joint statement, Community Legal Centres Australia, the Law Council of Australia, National Legal Aid and National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services urge the Australian Government to allow sufficient time to genuinely consult on amendments, safeguards and implementation relating to the proposed reforms to the NDIS. Government must work with people with disability and the disability sector to secure the NDIS by strengthening trust, safeguards and rights - not by rushing changes before their consequences are understood and planned for.

National Legal Aid welcomes consultation on Second Action Plan

National Legal Aid welcomed the Australian Government’s commencement of consultation on the Second Action Plan under the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022–2032. We commend the Government’s continued commitment to driving action to address gender-based violence and are grateful for the opportunity work closely with Government to ensure the Plan delivers practical, system-wide improvements.
